In the early hours of the 29th of November, the first new train to grace the Melbourne Metropolitan Network in over 15 years, was delivered from its assembly plant in Newport, to the new maintenance depot situated in Pakenham, specifically constructed to accomodate these new trains.
The High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMT) were built in response to the Metro tunnel project, in which a new cross city tunnel would be built to link the Sunbury Line in the North to the Cranboune/Pakenham Lines in the South East. Covered in this video is one of many that will be rolled out of Newport within the next couple of years. This inagurial run consisted of rollingstock from SSR, which not only hauled the consist but also contributed to supplying the brakes on the grain cars, in order to stop the new train, since the brake systems have not been fully certified for use yet. This run was also used to check other minor features such as platform gap distances as stations, among other points of interest.
In this video, we capture the transfer at four different locations, as the consist makes it way across town. It was also a rare occasion to see SSR rollingstock on the South Eastern side of town, an area in which they rarely go to, especially the grain wagons.
